Robben Island was a place of banishment. A place to brutalise prisoners, render them so painfully powerless that they would never be able to stand against the state again. A place to serve as a living reminder of what would happen to those who dared fight the system of apartheid. A place where the dreams and aspirations of the South African people were kept alive. A place I was exiled to from 1977 until 1982.
Our bodies may have been imprisoned, but our minds were free. Free to learn, free to grow.
